Internal Competitions


Typically, a competition is held about once a month. See the Programme for the competition dates for the current season.

This page contains a brief summary of the rules for each competition. The ultimate rulebook for competitions is the Club Handbook - please consult it in you are unsure of any details of the rules of a competition - this takes precedence over anything written below.

For the 2010-11 season, as with the previous season, digital projected images replace 35mm slides. See the document named Guidelines for internal and external competitions for specific requirements for entries.

Image details for digital entries

  • File Type: JPEG (no TIFF’s, PSDs, RAW, etc).
  • Colour Space: RGB (or Greyscale for monochrome).
  • Colour Profile: sRGB.
  • Image Size: maximum 1400 pixels horizontally and 1050 pixels vertically.
Note: pixels, not centimetres or inches “landscape” format images should therefore be a maximum of 1400 pixels wide, “portrait” format images should therefore be a maximum of 1050 pixels high, “square” images should be a maximum of 1050 x 1050 pixels.


Competitions mandated by the Constitution

  • Annual Digital Projected Image Competition

    Maximum four digital images. Colour or monochrome.

    No more than two of the entries may have been entered previously in any of the constitutionally mandated competitions (i.e. those competitions listed in this section).

  • Monochrome Trophy

    Maximum four mounted prints.

    No more than two of the entries may have been entered previously in any of the constitutionally mandated competitions (i.e. those competitions listed in this section).

  • Bamber Trophy Digital Projected Image Competition

    Maximum 2 sets, each of 5 digital images named to indicated your projection sequence. Sets are to demonstrate a wide variety of techniques and subject matter. No more than two of the entries in a set may have been entered previously in any of the constitutionally mandated competitions.
  • Colour Print

    Maximum four mounted prints.

    No more than two of the entries may have been entered previously in any of the constitutionally mandated competitions (i.e. those competitions listed in this section).

Other internal competitions

  • Set Subject Competitions

    Up to three set subject competitions are held annually. Each competition has a digital images and a prints section which are judged separately. Prints should be mounted and labelled. Up to 3 images can be entered per member and can be mounted prints, projected images or a mix of both media.

    An image may only ever be used in one Set Subject competition; it may however also be used twice in constitutionally mandated competitions.

    The subjects for the 2011-12 season will be:

    • Within a mile of home
    • After Dark
    • Nursery Rhymes and Fairy Tales
  • Photographer of the Year

    Not a judged competition as such; the 'Photographer of the Year' is awarded based on the total points gained for performance in the constitutionally mandated competitions and the set subject competitions over the year. Points are given for placings in these competitions thus:

  • Image of the Year

    The entries achieving first, second or third place in the constitutionally mandated competitions (both classes) and the set subject competitions (both digital images and prints) will go forward to the 'Image of the Year' competition, held at the end of the season.

    For the Bamber Trophy and the Monochrome Portfolio competitions, the entrant shall choose one image from the scoring set.

Members of the A and B Groups for Internal Competitions

For the internal competitions, club members are divided into 'A' and 'B' groups. The members of the 'A' group are listed here. Any paid-up club member not in group 'A' is automatically a member of the 'B' group.
